Week 02 [Deep Fake]

I thought about the term in its manifestation in the reality around us. Where do we encounter the fake?Where is the fake unashamed to be fake? And how does it transition from being just a fake scattered in our environment to acquiring a new identity by appearing in a different context?

I chose not to use software but instead to create a cluster of images that represent forgery from the public environment.

I wonder, in what way is the existence of the fake beneficial? (Because it certainly has its positive aspects too.)What need does it serve? And what message does its performance convey?

If the fake works well and functions effectively, then what is the difference?

  • WRITE a two paragraph response [post to the Discord, also share as a doc in your folder on the class google drive] two of the following (you can pick two contradictory opinions and compare, or two pieces that reinforce each other-- fine either way!) and post it on the Class Discord

The two articles I selected may not be directly connected, but they both captured my interest. The first, titled "Why A.I. Isn’t Going to Make Art," delves into the questions surrounding AI's role in art creation, considering how we interact with these technologies and the intentions behind their design.

The author emphasizes that making choices is an indispensable part of the artistic process, arguing that it’s a core element of genuine creativity. They prompt us to reflect on how much creative freedom we truly have when using AI models, which often rely on combining or replicating existing works.

This made me imagine if there were a program that not only helps artists in exploring various styles and compositions but also actively nurtured the creative decision-making process. Such a tool could serve as a platform for open dialogue, rather than functioning as a input-output machine, fostering a dynamic collaboration where the artist’s choices shapes the process of creation.

The second article “The Uneven Distribution of AI’s Environmental Impacts” explored how emerging technologies impact our environment and society, with a focus on sustainability and long-term consequences.

Over the past year, I’ve delved deeply into understanding energy and the crucial changes we need to make as a society to ensure a brighter future. I often feel both confused and anxious about the long-term effects of our current way of life, but I hold onto hope, believing that while we have the potential to cause harm, we also possess the capacity to drive positive change.

This article resonated with me because it thoughtfully examines how new technologies affect our environmental and social longevity. I sincerely hope that decision-makers will recognize the importance of these impacts and make informed choices that consider how they shape our environment and society.
